The Discovery and Resurrection of a Lost Plantation

Book Talk & Signing 4:00p.m. - 6:00p.m.

Planning a seaside resort on a virgin mountain beside a turquoise bay, Anthony J. Ayer instead found the ancient stone ruins of a “lost” plantation in the rainforest. Undaunted by a century’s growth of vines, trees, and tangled jungle flora, he and his wife Nancy set out to resurrect the abandoned Estate (as lands were called in Caribbean colonies). Not content to just reconstruct, they created a lavish and gracious home with every amenity: dining gallery, guesthouse, swimming pool, stables, labyrinth, and rum factory complete with dungeon.

Mosques: Splendors of Islam

2:00p.m. - 3:00p.m. Discover mosques from Europe, the Indian subcontinent, North America, North Africa and the sub-Sahara, the Middle East, and Russia and the Caucasus. Learn about their earliest origins in Mecca and Medina to contemporary masterpieces, highlighting major stylistic transformations as illustrated in the mosques of some of Islam’s great dynasties---the Umayyads, the Abbasids, the Mamluks, the Ottomans, the Safavids, and the Mughals.

5:30p.m. - 10:00p.m. Book Bacchanal is an event dedicated to authors reading from their works. We have several New York Times best-selling authors in the line up this year. We are also featuring new and emerging authors as well. This is also an opportunity for local poets to share their poetry in open mic.
