LLoyd "Dove" Braffith was a Cruzan artist who lived and worked on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Dove grew up in Frederiksted and it is said that he never left the island during his lifetime. Having never received formal training in the arts, Dove's artistic expertise is completely self-taught. Dove's paintings are known for their vibrant colors and borderline surreal atmopshere - often depicting people and architectural sites on the island of St. Croix. Dove was truly a central figure in the community, he could often be seen painting on the sidewalk. His favorite spots to paint included the Sunday Market Square and near the Catholic Church in Christiansted. Many of Dove's paintings are signed "BT" which is rumored to mean "world's best teacher". LLoyd "Dove" Braffith passed away in November, 2002 of heart failure. Every spring, in memory of Dove, the St. Croix Foundation awards a small scholarship to one individual who shows exceptional promise in the creative arts.
