After earning a Bachelor's degree in business at the University of Maryland, she joined Dance Afrika, an African Dance Group, and studied under notable West African dance mentors. After returning to St. Croix, she co-founded the Dembaya Arts Conservatory, where she serves as an instructor, choreographer, and performer. About the instructor Akua Jackson: Haitian Dance Dance has always been there. From family functions to church, school dances to formal dance classes while growing up in Detroit. Akua has been dancing and learning since she could walk. Trained in Jazz, Ballet and Tap as a child; and as a self-proclaimed citizen of the African Diaspora, Akua has studied our culture through dance in many places. She is thankful to her guides through Haitian Dance: Djenanne St. Juste, Collette Eloi, Daniel Brevil and Portsha Jefferson; developing as a student, company member, solist and instructor through their mentorship. She also studied and performed with the instructors of ENARTS (National School for the Arts) in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel, Auiti, developing a linfe-long love and respect for the people and culture of Ayiti. Taught from young to pass on the good that you get, she is grateful for chances to share what she knows.
