Calling all youths & teens that want to be part of CMCArts Children's Parade Troupe! FREE Age 8-17. (ALL guardians are welcome to walk with us on Children's Parade Day. Age 8-10 guardians must walk with our troupe to help assist.) Acclaimed dance instructor Michelle Gibson, CMCArts Artist-in-Residence will be teaching and preparing our troupe to dance down the road for the big day on January 5th! No prior dance skills needed. Dance Practices: December 19, 21, 27, 29 from 4-5:30pm (ALL Participants need to be fitted for costumes prior to Dance practices. Costumes Free.) Dress Rehearsal January 3 Children's Day Parade Friday, January 5th 9:30am meet at Claude O. Markoe School in Frederiksted. Ends at Governor's Review Stand by the Fort -4pm ish. About Instructor: Michelle N. Gibson is a consummate storyteller, employing body and mind to build a bridge between the arts and academia. She completed her BFA in Dance from Tulane University and her MFA from Holins University/American Dance Festival at Duke University. On stage and in the classroom, Ms. Gibson’s dance, choreography and associated scholarship evoke the social, political, economic and spiritual understandings central to building understanding within and across cultures. Employing pedagogical practices deeply rooted in both her New Orleans upbringing and the Black church, she provides cultural narratives and historical context for diasporic and African American dance forms, music and communal gatherings. Her embodiment of Jazz music, traditional funeral processions, Congo Square gatherings, the Black church, and Second Line parades celebrating community deeply informs her understanding and instruction of African-American vernacular dance forms. In every aspect of her daily practice. As a New Orleans Grand Marshal, Ms. Gibson shares her expertise, her passion, her healing practices, and her culturally driven spirit with her students, with her colleagues, with her audiences…and with you.
