Most known as a pottery glazing technique used during the Italian Renaissance, Sgraffito consists of a base layer that is one color overlaid by a contrasting color. The top layer is then “scratched” away to create patterns that reveal the bottom layer. This has been adapted for use with acrylic paints and other types of media throughout the ages.
