Adult Workshop Friday, July 17 6:00pm-8:30pm with Nora Álvarez Berríos Begin with a guided tour of Our Soil Beyond Materiality with artist Nora Álvarez Berríos along with Yomaries González, exploring the exhibition's themes of land, memory, identity, and the creative potential of soil as both material and storyteller. Then move into this hands-on workshop, where participants will create a small hand-built offering bowl from clay while reflecting on their relationship with the land that sustains them. Each bowl will embody an intention, memory, gratitude, or offering. Engobe and Glaze Exploration: Using samples from the Cartographies of Clay installation, participants will be introduced to engobes and glazes made with locally sourced soils. Participants will be invited to return their bowl to a meaningful outdoor location after the workshop and to observe its gradual transformation over time and through weather and ecological processes. About the Instructor: Nora Álvarez Berríos (Aibonito, Puerto Rico) Álvarez holds a bachelor ’ s degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico. She went on to earn dual master ’ s degrees in Land Resources and Geography from the University of Wisconsin and later completed a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico in 2016. From 2007 to 2009, she participated in the Superarte Program at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico, an experience that deepened her engagement with the visual arts. Her ceramic work has been featured in several group exhibitions. Álvarez ’ s work reflects a sustained and thoughtful engagement with the interconnected worlds of art, science, and nature, examining how these fields inform one another and contribute to a deeper understanding of our environment and our place within it.
