Service Description
Age 6-8 After-School 4:00pm-5:30pm Tuesdays: February 11, 18 & 25 Instructor: Croatian Author & Illustrator Dubravka Kolanovic, February's artist-in-residence This after-school program will draw inspiration from the current exhibition, Wire Art/Crucian Stories by artist Waldemar Brodhurst, and our February artist-in-residence, Dubravka Kolanovic, a renowned children's book author and illustrator. Participants will create their own stories based on the exhibition's "Under the Ocean" room, guided by Dubravka's expertise. As a longtime conservation volunteer and instructor, Dubravka will help participants build their stories around St. Croix's unique island environment, highlighting the importance of preserving the island's natural treasures. With Dubravka's guidance, participants will then embark on the illustration process. They will progress from laying out text and creating initial sketches to completing final artwork using the acrylic painting technique. This program promises a creative and educational journey celebrating art, storytelling, and environmental stewardship. About the Instructor: Dubravka studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design in the USA and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Croatia, where she got a degree in a painting . She published her first book, 'A Special Day', in the USA at the age of eighteen. Since then, Dubravka has devoted herself to children's book illustration. She is very proud of her long-standing collaboration with UNICEF, for which she has designed more then 80 cards and posters. Her books have featured on CBeebies Bedtime Hour. Dubravka's work was recognised by a prize by the Oshima Museum of Children's Picture Books in Japan. Her illustration work has also been recognised with awards and printed by 3x3, a magazine of contemporary illustrations. For years , she has volunteered in projects for the protection of the environment and animals throughout the world. All her travels and time spent in wonderful parts of the globe, such as the Amazon rainforest, African Savannah, Borneo, the Galapagos Islands, remote Pacific coral reefs, the Arctic and Antarctica are a constant source of inspiration.
