Poetry of Grief and Healing

November 19, 2020

For centuries, creating art, and writing poetry in particular, has served as a form of healing for hurt, pain and grief. We'll study and discuss examples of celebrated poems that tackle these difficult topics and discuss effective techniques for channeling our pain. Then, through a series of writing prompts, we'll examine our own experiences and turn them into poems. The course will also offer a brief introduction to meter and will consider tempo, pacing, and how to craft an ear-pleasing line of poetry. This workshop is for anyone who is interested in the incredible transformative power of poetry to heal our wounds.

Price: $50 per person

Experience art at a new level and use it to inspire your writing. Internationally known poet Jodie Hollander teaches this workshop, in which participants respond poetically to exhibitions at the museum. Students will study examples of celebrated poems that respond to or were inspired by art. Then students will be led through a variety of writing activities inspired by art at the museum, ultimately leading to a draft of an original poem. Students will discuss poetic techniques such as the use of vivid imagery, the importance of sonics, how to shape a poetic line as well as techniques for drafting and revision.

Telling your story through poetry

November 15, 2020

This course is for High School age students.
Humans have long been attracted to the art of storytelling. One could say that our lives are composed of a series of different stories that we tell ourselves and/or one another. In this workshop, we'll look at this narrative art and how to effectively channel our experiences into powerful poetry. Then, through a series of writing prompts, we'll examine our own narratives and turn them into poems. This course will also consider tempo, pacing, and effective use of line breaks. This workshop is for anyone interested in poetry and story telling. This workshop is free to High School Students.
