With visiting artists Virginia Bradley & Chris Malcomson

This workshop will emphasize experimentation with materials and the use of intuition and risk-taking to build a language for creating abstract works.  Participants will learn to “swim” and have a fluid relationship with materials and processes.  They will work in equilibrium with the materials rather than try to control the outcome of the process.  Simultaneously, formal and technical concerns will be addressed as the works develop. Contemporary and historical artists such as Max Ernest, Hilma af Klint, Wassily Kandinsky, Julie Mehretu, Mark Bradford, Beatriz Milhazes , Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin and Joan Mitchell will be incorporated. We will also have various group critiques during the workshop.

The workshop will begin with charcoal drawing exercises that emphasize “chance and order, a surrealist technique. Then we will add acrylic paint, pastel, watercolor and any other media on hand to our ingredients or “pool”. The workshop will be quite physical as it includes large scale drawing, pouring paint, adding and subtracting into surfaces, working on the ground as well easels.  Be prepared to get dirty!

Our goal will be for each participant to have four finished abstract works by the end of the workshop.
