About the Event

Join CMCArts as we celebrate the culmination of Dr. Hadiya Sewer’s artist-in-residence with an artist talk. During March and April, Dr. Sewer worked with high school students to create a zine (online magazine) exploring what it means to be a Virgin Islander through writing, photography, and visual art as part of the Young Philosophy Series held in their classrooms. Building on these explorations of identity, voice, and storytelling, the artist talk takes the form of a poetry reading from a body of work developed during a period of spiritual initiation, transformation, and travel across Nigeria, Jordan, Morocco, the Virgin Islands, and Egypt. Grappling with Blackness, embodiment, memory, and the afterlives of the dead, the poems reflect on what it means to hold multiple ways of knowing as an Afro-Caribbean woman desiring decolonization. The title is inspired by Sylvia Wynter's theories and Lucille Clifton's poems. The work blends philosophy and poetry…
