About the Event

Amy K Bormet is a pianist, vocalist, and composer, known for her fearless free-wheeling style and dedication to creating new music. She formed several ensembles to perform and record her compositions, including the Los Angeles-based quintet AmyAna, co-led with Brazilian drummer Ana Barreiro, and the Ephemera quintet, a project of women's poetry and improvisation. Bormet leads the annual Washington Women in Jazz Festival, which she started in 2011 as a way to collaborate with and celebrate women musicians. Bormet is an educator and mentor, teaching at the summer program for the Washington Jazz Arts Institute, where she has participated since she was a high school student at Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Bormet holds an MFA in Jazz Studies from Howard University.

The Amy K Bormet Trio includes two other accomplished musician educators, drummer Angel Bethea and bassist Karine Chapdelaine. Angel Bethea is a recent graduate of George Mason University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and a Minor in Jazz Studies and Arts Management. She performs with a diverse set of ensembles such as Shannon Gunn & the Bullettes and Terra Firma. Bassist Karine Chapdelaine has an active performance career that includes international performances in Europe, South America, Mexico, Africa, and Asia. She shared the stage with artists such as McCoy Tyner, Bobby McFerrin, Sheila Jordan, Mary Halvorson, and Allison Miller. Like Bormet, Chapdelaine also holds an MFA in Jazz Studies from Howard University.
