About the Event

Johanna Bermúdez-Ruiz is an Award-Winning artist, writer, and director, producer whose work has been seen worldwide. Johanna’s film legacy includes her Award-Winning Films: SUGAR PATHWAYS, VIEQUES: AN ISLAND FORGING FUTURES, and SOLÉNE. Johanna is the principal of Cane Bay Films, LLC that provides media and film production services to Government Agencies, Corporations, and Non-profit Organizations. Her small business is located in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, with a satellite office in New York City.

Her film, SUGAR PATHWAYS, tells the riveting story of the unwilling migration by Puerto Rican families from the small Caribbean island of Vieques to the US Virgin Islands. This powerful and vibrant film recounts their will to survive the journey, integrate, and contribute to the culture, economy and politics of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sugar Pathways is narrated by actress Luna Lauren Vélez of the Emmy Award-winning Showtime series “Dexter.”Nominated Best Film Directed by a Woman of Color, African Diaspora International Film Festival.

Johanna is a sought-after speaker and lecturer and has provided meaningful discussions to students and faculty at Princeton University, New York University, University of California Los Angeles, and Claremont Graduate University. Rutgers University utilizes “Sugar Pathways as an education tool in their programming. She was an adjunct professor at Hunter College; and a published writer and poet. Her films have been archived at the prestigious British Film Institute (BFI), Rutgers University, and Hunter College; and have screened worldwide, including Denmark, Switzerland, France, and Japan.
