“Choco” was born in the province of Santiago de Cuba. He is a graduate of the Escuela de Instructores de Arte (Art Instructor’s School) and the Escuela Nacional de Arte (National Art School). He is a prolific artist and teacher. There have been two crucial moments in Choco´s career. The first, when he was recognized as one of the leading figures of the rural movement in painting, which was significant in shaping the 70’s generation of Cuban artists. The second was his exploration of collagraphy in the 80s and early 90s, an achievement that has awarded him the distinction, master of collagraphy. He was one of the first Cuban artists invited to the United States to exhibit his work in 1980, after the 1959 Cuban revolution.

Choco is known for using Santeria (Afro-Cuban religion) imagery, orishas (gods), and tones associated with the religion, to portray the situations of everyday life of today’s Cuba.
Choco has had a number of one-person exhibitions throughout the world, among them: Cuba, Spain, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia, Sweden, Japan, France, UK, Germany, and various states of US. He is the recipient of the prestigious Grand Prize at the Triennial in Kochi, Japan.
