Teen Series: Layers of Memory: Painting, Collage, and Storytelling Age 13-18 June Series: Wednesdays & Fridays 8 Sessions for $40 total: June 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26 9:00am-12pm CMCArts Courtyard In this June workshop series with Lisa DeAbreu CMCArts Artist-in-Residence, we will be actively recording things we notice, learning how to archive and keep record. We will represent people we want to remember. Learn ways to help memory to live on using repetition, pattern and craft techniques. Students will create mixed-media works showing layered memory. Week 1: Recording Textures; Making frottage rubbings with graphite, chalks and pastels, collecting textures and nature. Week 2: Coming into Focus Black and white acrylic painting and painting with a limited color palette. Week 3: Textile Memory Embroidering on different types of cloth, fiber and paper collage with family photos. Week 4: Layered Keepsake Mixed media painting on textiles and adding embroidery to that textile. About the Instructor: Lisa DeAbreu, CMCArts June Artist-in-Residence New York & Family Ties to St. Croix Lisa DeAbreu is a visual artist and educator from New York. She completed her Bachelors in Fine Arts and an Art History and Education Minor at the University at Buffalo. At the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, She completed a Post Baccalaureate Certificate and completed her Masters in Fine Art and Studio in Painting and Drawing. Lisa combines symbolism, iconography from Caribbean culture, and personal family stories to intertwine nostalgic emotions and diasporic histories. Lisa’s unique artistic vision is articulated through the exploration of identity with an intervention of lived material. Lisa’s pieces delve into the intersections of personal narrative and cultural heritage, using sentimental objects of home to evoke profound themes of existence and transformation. She has shown her work at the University at Buffalo Student Union, Silo City Buffalo NY, University at Buffalo Center for the Arts Project Space.
