Youth Series: Layers of Memory: Painting, Collage, and Storytelling Age 8-12 June Summer Series: Tuesdays & Thursdays 8 Sessions Total for $40: June 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25 9:00am-12:00pm CMCArts Courtyard In this workshop series with Lisa DeAbreu CMCArts June Artist-in-Residence, we will be thinking about how we can remember special moments in our lives, be present in the world around us, and retell stories. We will work on drawing basics, sharpening our observation and imaginative skills. Students will create work utilizing personal photos and other imagery to make layered works of art. Week 1: Observing Our World Sketchbook making, drawing what you know vs. drawing what you see. Week 2: Feeling and Remembering Painting with a plan vs. painting from memory with watercolor. Week 3: Piecing Together Drawing with scissors, assembling photo collage with family photos. (copies of photos) Week 4: Fragments Made Whole Mixed media collage and collages that tell stories. About the Instructor: Lisa DeAbreu, CMCArts June Artist-in-Residence New York & Family Ties to St. Croix Lisa DeAbreu is a visual artist and educator from New York. She completed her Bachelors in Fine Arts and an Art History and Education Minor at the University at Buffalo. At the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, She completed a Post Baccalaureate Certificate and completed her Masters in Fine Art and Studio in Painting and Drawing. Lisa combines symbolism, iconography from Caribbean culture, and personal family stories to intertwine nostalgic emotions and diasporic histories. Lisa’s unique artistic vision is articulated through the exploration of identity with an intervention of lived material. Lisa’s pieces delve into the intersections of personal narrative and cultural heritage, using sentimental objects of home to evoke profound themes of existence and transformation. She has shown her work at the University at Buffalo Student Union, Silo City Buffalo NY, University at Buffalo Center for the Arts Project Space.
